gallery hm is proud to present "Tribal Revolution" by Rachel Dickson, a Sydney-based multi-media artist, as part of its programme to support young, talented, emerging artists. "Tribal Revolution" portrays an arts extravaganza of contemporary tribal thought. It explores the story of an energetic return to a rich tribal culture. This story of a rugged future is depicted through exuberant colours, juxtaposing textures and original performances in order to create a futuristic landscape of positivity and community. works include photography, textiles, metal works, sculpture and blown glass. Exhibition opening Friday, 14 August, 2009 at 6:30pm till 10:30 .. . . . . a soiree of funky tribal artworks with drinks and snacks. "Sanctified Sinners - The Preposterous Saints"
            Works by Chaia Fein

The Preposterous Saints - The Saints The Church Didn't Want You To Hear About.

Cradled in the arm of her eternally attentive lover, Saint Intravenous gives herself and her lifeblood willingly to the irresistible St Sanguivorous as he drains her of her very soul in order to satisfy his bloodlust. Universally desirable St Androgynous desports her allure before his adoring audience. How could this possibly be saintly discourse?
And yet such are two of the images of Chaia Fein's deliciously irreverent take on the lives of some Preposterous Saints.
Fifteen years, or perhaps more accurately centuries in the making, her compendium of Preposterous Saints casts new light on the Church's less salubrious register of canonised characters. Purportedly based on a diary uncovered in a family crypt by a certain Contessa Priscilla de Preposterous and cryptically consisting only of Saints with a name ending in 'ous' it was passed on to the artist to be preserved for posterity.
Led by the charismatic Saint Blasphemous and honourably abetted by the Seven Deadly Saints and the Unwholesome Trinity, this cavalcade of sanctified misfits, felons and the misunderstood presents us with an imaginative and graphic counterpoise to accepted concepts of human piety.

Sydney-based artist Fein has re-created 366 Preposterous Saints for our daily nourishment, illustrating 25 of them with accompanying historical notes. Recently returned from living and exhibiting in Italy for many years and influenced by its relics and icon industry she has combined a love of language with her vivid imagination to create images of a confronting and fascinating quality. Though venerated in many circles, this illustrious hagiographer holds little hope of herself achieving sainthood, especially in her lifetime.

"Cultural Competence - 너 + 나 + 우리"

gallery hm of Australia and Gallery Pakyoung of South Korea have been working together for the last 6 months to curate an exhibition called "Cultural Competence" which will open at Gallery Pakyoung, South Korea, on May 1st, 2009 and run through till the end of May.  Ariel Moscovici (France), Chung Yong-Chang (Germany), H. M. Du Rhone (Australia), Ramon Roig (Spain), Sylvie Rivillon (France) and Tilmann Krieg(Germany) will all show current works.

The proposed exhibition “ Cultural Competence – 너 + 나 = 우리” is based on experiences some artists have when they travel or migrate to a different country or culture. How can the change and experience be improvised and digested to make the artworks appeal to the audiences who might have very different sets of values and understandings?

In this modern world, artists travel extensively to create and exhibit their works in many different places and some artists successfully bridge the gap between two cultures through their art practice or artworks. This trend is being recognized in this contemporary society as the world gets smaller through the advance of technology and information processing.

What makes this possible?
Why do some artworks appeal to others from different culture?

To answer the questions we should define the meaning of culture and what enables us to overcome the differences.

Culture is an abstract concept that is based on history, belief and tradition and it can be learnt, shared and changed depending on who we are and how we approach it. To be aware of one’s own cultural view and develop knowledge of different cultural practice and worldview can enhance cross-cultural skills. This cross-cultural skill will result in cultural competence in one’s attitude and by developing cultural competence enhance one’s ability to interact with people across cultures.

The artists in this exhibition are from Australia, France, Germany and Spain and they practise their art- making in diverse media such as installation, painting, sculpture and photography. All the artists have been involved in cross-cultural experiences through interaction with other cultures, particularly with Korea in recent years. This exhibition will be a good showcase of how the interaction of different cultures harmonize us rather then separate and alienate us.

The Korean word “우리 (uoo – ri)” means “we or us” in English but it has a fundamental and cultural connotation that is embedded in the Korean psyche. The word carries a strong emotional connection to the person or group, almost like family or close relations in Korea, and it is one of the exemplary words that include everybody regardless of who you are and where you are from. Through this exhibition the artists and the audiences will become “우리” to strengthen the ongoing communication and interaction between Korea and the world.

 "Meditative Landscapes"
New works by H.M.Du Rhone
Wednesday 25th March - Sunday 26th April

"Breeze down the creek" Acrylic on canvas,
60 x 60 cm, 2009

The exhibition “Meditative Landscape” is about her interpretation of the Australian environment based on Zen meditation. The philosophy of flower arrangement is one way of meditation to reach enlightenment so she used humble gum tree twigs that we see everywhere in Australia to represent the beauty and significance of nature and arranged the twigs in meditative ways. H.M.Du Rhone extended this using other products of the Australian bush - leaves, flowers, nuts, branches - to form her visual meditative responses.

"Modern Morpheus"
In conjunction with the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras
Morpheus, god of dreams, can appear in many shapes and guises - he's in your dreams!
In Greek mythology Morpheus is the god of dreams, able to take any human's form and appear in dreams as if in reality. Carol Dance, well-known Sydney artist, has brought this ancient belief into the 21st century in her latest series of paintings pursuing the idea of entering another's form and challenging accepted concepts of normalcy. She is exhibiting from February 25th to March 8th at Redfern's gallery hm.   "I now create mainly Figurative Symbolic paintings. An object in these paintings morphs into another object (a bomb to a bird, a swish of hair into a key, a necklace into moons, a man into a woman and vice versa). Each viewer interprets these paintings differently. It's wonderfully fascinating to hear what people think these works mean. The interpretations vary wildly. Just like dreams."

"Crisis, What Crisis?
4th - 15 February, 2009
Opening 6pm Wednesday 4th February 2009

Grand re-opening group exhibition at new location

Richard Baxter, Louise Beck, Anthea Boesenberg, Carol Dance, Anna Glynn, Megan Jones, Andrew Lo, Chris Stevenson

Richard Baxter " Night Swimming" Digital print on paper

Art must go on. And so it shall as gallery hm re-opens at its new location in Redfern Wednesday, 4th February, at 6pm with a group exhibition from 8 of its artists, defying the atmosphere of universal financial malaise. Hence the title, Crisis, What Crisis?

Chris Stevenson is showing her dreamlike bush landscapes in her typical scratched, layered style juxtaposed with Andrew Lo's delicate collographs on Xuan paper; Megan Jones presents some examples from her Emotional Atoms series on the connection between the natural world and human emotions; Anna Glynn's graphic drawings incorporate shadow-like figures of boat builders past; Adelaide's Richard Baxter has some of his phantasmagorical digital prints to stimulate the imagination and Carol Dance also poses imaginative visual challenges with her bright acrylic paintings; Anthea Boesenberg's printmaking meets encaustic in non-representational works exploring surfaces and finally Louise Beck reprises her distorted angular interpretation of Sydney's iconic wonders.

The usual arty party with free grog, nibbles, artists on tap and lots of buzz and conversation about the world financial crisis . . . . and art!

The exhibition continues till Sunday 15th February - opening hours Wed-Sun 12-6pm.

" Unsquare Dance"

 4th - 29th Octorber 2006
by
Carol Dance

Carol paints from her imagination, using bold shapes, strong colours and complex textures to create landscapes, figures and abstracts that stimulate our imaginations. These juxtaposed elements have become her trademark.

Some paintings are 'unsquare' and 'unflat'.

Carol began painting in earnest in 2000 and in that time has had many solo exhibitions, corporate commissions and an artist-in-resident position.

"Conversations with Bruno Schulz"
        by Megan Jones
    4th - 29th Octorber 2006

These paintings are reflections on life- a consideration of aspects of the individual’s journey in the world.

Occasioned by the short stories of the Polish writer Bruno Schulz, this series represents my contemplation of time and the world, the tasks or events each of us has to negotiate at different moments in and out of time, and the realisations we come to.

Will and the imagination both play a part in determining the outcome, which though different for each individual contains the same basic elements. Through these paintings I am trying to understand the patterns and meaning of life’s journey.

"into the garden of my delight"

6th - 30th September 2006
                by
    Cooper Wilson

Drinks with the artists : Saturday 9th September 4-6pm

into the garden of my delight is a metaphor for the impact that my suburban garden has on my artistic imagination.

Landscape―large and small―has always been integral to my painting. In 1998, when I began planting it, work in the garden resonated at a very personal level. During the next few years, I watched plants growing, seasons changing and storms building just metres from my studio.

Now the garden is almost fully grown. Viewed from my studio, it exists as an ornamental backdrop. Subconsciously, it inspires me, sustains me, nourishes me and entertains me and after eight years of observing its growth and mine, I felt ready and able to celebrate it in paint.

The show consists of large works executed in an expressive, layered style with a range of shapes that suggest vegetation, fences, clouds and seedpods.

"Madonnas, Strangers and Paradise"
9th August - 2nd September
by
Robyn Base
Meet the artist on Saturday 12th August 4-6pm

This exhibition has two themes-both which look at women’s roles in contemporary society. The ‘Madonnas’ icons and oil paintings explore the dichotomy of the holiness and the ordinariness of the mother and child relationship, a universal bond.
The ‘Paradise’ and ‘Majesty’ series and etchings examine perceptions of an Australian Identity in the context of a colonial past and an urban present. The works draw upon past traditions of painting and focus on the iconic image of a burqa-clad woman, who represents the changing ’face’ of the perennial ‘new australian’. The exhibition delves into Australian notions of paradise and majesty, isolation and empowerment.

"Alive and Kicking in Korea"
28th June - 22 July 2006
Five Korean Women Contemporary Artists

Contemporary art is alive and kicking in Korea!

This is a rare opportunity to encounter artworks produced by Korean female artists who choose to continue the traditional Korean painting style in this contemporary time.

In Korea, painting is divided into two styles: one is Western which uses oil or acrylic paints on canvas (called Seo-Yang-Hwa) and the other Korean traditional painting which uses ink and stone paints on mulberry paper(called Dong-Yang-Hwa). These two painting styles bring the old and new in Korean contemporary art together and form a unique trend.

gallery hm will be showing five Korean artists who employ Dong-Yang-Hwa with a contemporary edge. This exhibition is an introduction to the ongoing contribution of women artists in Korean art to an Australian audience and hopefully will establish this flourishing creativity firmly in our artistic mindset.

Elena Artyushkova

8th March - 1st April, 2006

gallery hm is delighted to be exhibiting the latest paintings of Elena Artyushkova. Elena was born in Uzbekistan in 1976 growing up with her nomadic geologist parents in the hot winds and red sands of the desert region of Kyzlkum which imbued her with a sense of endlessness and freedom. In 1996 she came to Australia, another land of red deserts and endless horizon, where she has made a new home. Now this self-taught artist finds serenity in creating a series of paintings which have been inspired by her garden surrounds in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. These artworks are simply as full of life as she herself is.

"Beijing Dreaming, Bundeena Dawn"
Lin Chun Yan
8th February - 4th March 2006

Lin Chun Yan was born in Beijing in 1962. Prior to coming to Australia he worked as a full-time artist. Lin Chun Yan was regarded as one of the leading, self-styled artists in Beijing and participated in a number of local and international exhibitions. Like many young Chinese artists, he is essentially self-taught and carries with him an anarchic individualism that is characteristic of artists born in the 60s who were too young to experience the full horror of the Cultural Revolution.

"Nowadays, he has given up on urban claustrophobia and discovered the Australian bush. His recent paintings are full of space, light, and joie de vivre. His preferred motif is a loose-limbed figure with a bouquet of wild flowers or gum blossoms for a head. This blossom man may be found levitating through a forest or by the sea. Lin Shows not the slightest regard for drawing or anatomy - his is an art of pure feeling. His floating figures are symbols of ecstatic freedom and his style is closely matched to his preoccupations"

Bush Calligraphy

by Hyun Mi Lee

The exhibition will run until Saturday 3rd, December, 2005

“Bush Calligraphy” is about my interpretation of the Australian environment based on Zen meditation. The philosophy of flower arrangement is one way of meditating to reach enlightenment so I used humble gum tree twigs that we see everywhere in Australia to represent the beauty and significance of nature and arranged the twigs in meditative ways. I extended this using other products of the Australian bush, leaves, flowers, nuts, branches to form my visual meditative responses. This exercise is about finding my relationship to the Australian bush and establishing my perception towards an environment, previously so alien, where I feel I now belong.
